Interpretation and the Art of the Bow
August 21, 2020 – 6PM
In this session, Astrid Schween will explore the wonderfully colorful art of bowing. The bow is central to the artist’s ability to convey song or speech, render a variety of colors, characters, gestures and intensities. Highlighting rhythm, phrasing, style and meter, we will delve into the standard French bow strokes in the context of musical examples from the cello and chamber music repertoire. Our goal is to integrate the technical components of bowing into the interpretive decision-making process.
